Seiko 6139 Pogue Chronograph Year 1976

The Seiko 6139 “Pogue” is more than just a vintage chronograph, it’s a legend born from innovation, competition, and space exploration.

In 1969, the watch world was locked in a race to create the first automatic chronograph. While Swiss brands formed the Chronomatic group and Zenith introduced the El Primero, Seiko quietly unveiled the 6139 in Japan. Unlike many of its competitors, Seiko’s movement was fully integrated, automatic, and featured a column wheel and vertical clutch — technologies that were far ahead of their time and still used in high-end chronographs today.

The nickname “Pogue” came years later, tied to a remarkable moment in history. In 1973, NASA astronaut Colonel William Pogue wore his personal Seiko 6139 during the Skylab 4 mission, making it the first automatic chronograph worn in space. Unlike the officially issued Omega Speedmaster, the Seiko was Pogue’s personal watch, chosen for its practicality and reliability. This real, unscripted use in space cemented the 6139’s legendary status.

Condition Report:

The watch is in overall good and original condition. The original blue dial shows small signs of wear with no visible scratches or marks on the dial. All the lume are the original tritium lume, with all the lume on the dial still intact, lume on the hour hand intact, but the lume on the minute hand missing. The case had been lightly polished and still retaining sharp and strong edges. The original blue and red bezel has some visible scratches throughout with the red starting to fade. The watch bracelet is original factory and in fair condition. The still has the original glass domed crystal and has been polished to exemplify the dial even better. The watch had been fully overhauled serviced and is now keeping great time. Video of result in timegrapher after service is available upon request.
