—————
Introduced in 1952, the Constellation was conceived around precision, refinement and chronometer performance. Following the earlier Centenary, it became Omega’s flagship production line, and vintage Constellations were distinguished by chronometer-rated movements rather than simply being standard automatic watches dressed in more luxurious cases.
By the 1970s, however, the Constellation was changing. The Ref. 168.047 is a wonderful example of that transition. Often nicknamed the “TV Shape” Constellation, its broad, almost square stainless-steel case surrounds a silver dial beneath a large shaped crystal. At approximately 34 × 39mm, the proportions are unmistakably 1970s, particularly when paired with its substantial integrated-style Omega bracelet.
Inside this example is the Omega Calibre 1001, an automatic movement from Omega’s 1000-series generation.
Today, the 168.047 TV Shape represents a fascinating and sometimes overlooked chapter of Omega history. It is unmistakably a product of the 1970s, yet its purpose remained rooted in the original Constellation philosophy.
